The common metric used to assess the success of an entrepreneur is his or her current net worth in relation to the number available at career inception. But in the case of Paul Mihailides, Founder and Chairman of The Preserve Sporting Club and Resort, such a process is shamefully inadequate.
The value of Mr. Mihailides — his worth — to the cause of environmental preservation is, in a word, incalculable. His vision for The Preserve was informed to a significant degree by his love for the natural word and his understanding that “development” unrestrained by similar reverence produces fleeting profit and ultimate degradation of the planet’s self-sustaining capabilities.
Mr. Mihailides often speaks of his rejection of what he calls “false binaries” — either/or choices that need not be viewed as incompatible. So when he is asked if he is an entrepreneur or a preservationist, his answer is always a resounding “Yes!”
That being noted, Paul Mihailides resists the notion that he qualifies as an idealist. “I’m a disciplined businessman, and an incredibly successful one,” he states proudly. “But I never allow my professional endeavors and my responsibility to the bottom line to diminish my commitment to preservation.”
The Mihailides formula for simultaneous successes in both spheres is based upon a deep insight simply expressed. “In today’s transactional world, preservation will progress in direct proportion to its proven financial profitability,” he states confidently.
The Preserve presents as dynamic proof of the Mihailides calculation. Its 3,500 acre expanse offers countless varieties of flora and fauna and topography distinguished by lush fields, virgin forest, and hills and boulders donated ten thousand years ago by retreating glaciers. That land has been respectfully groomed to support more than 70 sporting adventures, dazzling luxury residences of diverse sizes, a spa to rival the finest in America, Europe and Asia, an equestrian training and riding facility, a nationally celebrated fine dining establishment, an “everything outdoor superstore” retail oasis, and an ultra-sophisticated shooting range with the longest indoor lanes on the continent.
And yet … Mr. Mihailides summarizes the symbiotic relationship between the works of human ingenuity and the sacred masterpieces in which they are located in memorable fashion. “For Preserve residents, the journey from limitless luxury to nature’s wonders is a simple matter of opening your front doors.”
In the near future, Mr. Mihailides plans to host a multi-day conference at The Preserve where noted preservationists, scientists, educators, entrepreneurs, and political leaders can exchange ideas on how the economic development and preservation agendas can find common ground.
Mr. Mihailides notes, “For some time I’ve given thought to creating what might best be called ‘The Preserve Think Tank’ with revolving areas of focus and rosters of experts. The conference currently under consideration would make for an ideal maiden voyage.”
For now, summer is beginning to pack its bags as autumn awaits over the horizon. The Preserve wears the seasons like couture, dressed in the elegant colors and contours designed by the mind of a Master.
Mr. Mihailides cordially invites one and all to experience the flow of seasons at his sprawling, realized dream. “Adventure, luxury, and serenity are our hallmarks and our commitments,” he states with soft authority. “Come to beautiful Richmond, Rhode Island. Walk and ride our forest trails where time has no dominion. Play the games we love. Care for your body and spirit. Indulge your palate.
“And join me in minding nature’s business.”
